Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA (August 2023)

For our anniversary this year we decided to take a trip to Charleston and Savannah. During the trip we also stopped at several South Carolina state parks (see this post).

We had been to Charleston before, so we just wanted to eat and enjoy a walk along the riverfront: past Rainbow Row: on cobblestone streets: and along the Riverfront Park and Fountain.

We also decided to cross the Ravenel Bridge and visit Fort Moultrie. Fort Moultrie is a twin fort to the better known Fort Sumter. Together they protected the entrance to Charleston harbor. What I enjoyed most about Fort Moultrie was that they had sections of the fort that were dedicated to showing what it looked like from its founding in 1776 to its closing in 1947.

This was our first trip to Savannah, GA. We got on the Old Trolley Tour of Savannah. The trolley tour was nice because it stopped at all the major tourist destinations in Savannah. We simply got off at the destinations we wanted to explore and when we were finished we jumped back on the next trolley. It was also nice because there was a tour guide on each trolley and they did a great job discussing each stop. Our stops included Forsythe Park and Fountain, several of the historic squares, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Riverside District and statutes, and we ate at the Pirate House. It was a nice trip and a good introduction to Savannah, GA.
