May Days (May 2026)
Grandsons
Both of our grandsons completed the Law Enforcement Career program at the Enoree Career Center. The Law Enforcement program is part of the South Carolina Public Service & Safety Career Cluster. Instruction introduces students to the fundamentals of policing, corrections, and public safety while preparing them with certifications and experiences that strengthen both career readiness and future study in criminal justice. Both grandsons earned the following certifications:
Tier 1: OSHA-10, Stop the Bleed, IS-907 Active Shooter: What You Can Do
Tier 2: First Aid/CPR/AED, YouScience Industry Certification: Criminal Justice 1
Tier 3: National Incident Management System Certification, YouScience Industry Certification: Criminal Justice 2
The graduation from this and the other programs at the Enoree Career Center took place at Trailblazers Park in Travelers Rest, SC.
Texas Trip
Our only trip this month was a Mother’s Day trip to Texas to visit and be of help to Tammie’s mom. We flew Delta into Shreveport, LA and then rented a pickup truck to make the two hour drive into Mt. Pleasant, TX. We visited with Tammie’s mom on Mother’s Day, went shopping for a box spring for Tammie’s mom, took her mom to a doctor’s appointment, and visited with other family members.
Every time we visit with our mother’s we are aware that we may not have many visits left. This visit when we took Tammie’s mom out to eat we went to one of her mom’s favorite restaurants, Ma’s Cafe, in Leesburg, TX. The building use to contain a gas station and convenience store. When Tammie was a young girl her grandfather would take her and her cousins on a ride in the back of a pickup to this location to get a cold Yahoo to drink. Just across the street from this location is the small Baptist church where Tammie’s mom was baptized and where she and her husband were married in 1954.
At the end of our trip we drove back to Shreveport, LA and stayed one night at the Live Casino and Hotel. We had a very early flight to catch the next morning so we just spent a few minutes looking around the lobby and ordered a pizza from the onsite restaurant. We got to bed early and got up at 3:00 am to make sure we returned our rental truck and got to our 6:00 am flight back to Greenville, SC.
TSA Precheck
In anticipation of increasing how often we fly, we decided to apply for the TSA Precheck that allows you to bypass the long TSA check-in lines. This required us to have passports, birth certificates, complete online applications, get an appointment for an enrollment center, go to the enrollment center with the appropriate documents (real ID driver’s license, passport birth certificate), have fingerprints made, and get your picture taken). After completing the process, you get a Known Traveler Number (KTN) which gets printed on your boarding pass and allows you to use the TSA Precheck line. The cost was $76 each. We had to go to the enrollment center twice since the first time we attempted their system was not working. Other than that issue, the process was not too difficult.
Topgolf, Pickleball, and Dance
We renewed our summer fun pass at Topgolf for another summer and went several times in May. We played pickleball on a couple of good weather days, started practicing our dancing again, and walked the neighborhood a few times as well. Finally, our neighborhood pool opened and my granddaughter and I got in our first swim.
