Memories, Golf, and Waterfalls (May 2025)
Throughout the month of May we made good use of our Summer Fun Pass at Topgolf. We went together, with our daughter, and with our grandsons. While I hit the ball farther, Tammie is more accurate and hits the closer targets. She beats me two out of every three games. So far, we are having a great time together.
We took a Mother's Day trip to Hendersonville, NC. We ate blueberry pancakes at Fireside Restaurant with our daughter then took a 2-mile hike through Bell Park near Saluda, NC. Bell Park opened in November 2024, in partnership with Conserving Carolina. Bell Park is located on Spartanburg Highway (176) on the slopes above the Green River Gorge. This park offers an observation deck with a bench beside a waterfall.
Behind the Badge
During National Police Week we were invited by Upstate Warriors Solution to the BBQ lunch and live broadcast held at the Rupert Huse Veteran Center in honor of National Police Week and Peace Officer Memorial Day. It was an honor for us to eat lunch with the law enforcement officers who were there and to remember those who gave their lives protecting all of us, including our son, Officer Allen Jacobs.
Campbell's Covered Bridge about 17 miles northeast of Travelers Rest in Greenville County is a great picnic spot. This was our first visit there. Campbell’s Covered Bridge was built between 1909 and 1911 is the only remaining covered bridge in the state of South Carolina, a state that once had 20 covered bridges. The 38 foot long, 12-foot-wide pine structure that spans Beaverdam Creek was built by Charles Irwin Willis. The bridge is named for Alexander Lafayette Campbell who operated the grist mill just downstream of the bridge.
Fallen Officer Memorial Service
We attended the Fallen Officer Memorial Service at the Greenville Law Enforcement Center. We appreciate GPD Chief Howie Thompson and Sheriff Hobart Lewis for their leadership of law enforcement and for their kindness towards us. The service had the four elements that always hits me hard emotionally: playing of Taps on the trumpet, playing Amazing Grace on the bagpipes, a helicopter flyover, and the memorial roll call of all the names of law enforcement who have died in the line of duty in Greenville county since 1794.
North Carolina Waterfall Trip
It was a beautiful afternoon in Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina visiting Looking Glass Falls. We took our daughter with us for a one-hour drive on Highway 276 into North Carolina. Looking Glass Falls may be the most beautiful easily accessible falls in North Carolina. This 75-foot waterfall is located along the scenic Highway 276. It is easy to admire from the roadside observation deck, or you can take the stairs down for a closer look. You can also walk on the rocks and even wade in the water near the bottom of the waterfall. You can get some great pictures here if you get here when it isn’t too crowded.
We drove one mile north on Highway 276 to a parking area so that we could hike to Moore Cove Falls. The trail is an easy 3/4-mile hike over wooden bridges, steps and boardwalks and ends in a 50-foot plunge waterfall over a dramatic rock ledge. The best thing about this waterfall is the ability to walk behind it. We enjoyed the hike and walking behind the waterfall to take pictures.
